Dandy in the Underworld

Edgar Orlaineta

curated by Tilman Wendland

funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds

Dandy in the Underworld is a selection of works produced since 1999 by the Mexican artist Edgar Orlaineta using everyday objects. His works focus the phenomenological structure that exists between himself and a certain object. In his endeavours, he scrutinizes the material that surrounds us and attempts to decipher its purpose. In Ostrich he extends the slender legs of a Thonet chair using the handles of four wooden walking sticks, whose handy curves quote the two struts of the chairÕs backrest.

I met Edgar Orlaineta during a trip to Mexico City, where he was born in 1972 and where he lives and works. Orlaineta is in Berlin for the first time.

To date, his work has been shown at a variety of venues in Mexico and the USA. At present, his exhibition entitled Side story - the C.U. chair is on show at the Museo Univercitario de Ciencias y Arte in Mexico City, and in the autumn he will realize a work at the Sculpture Center in New York.

My thanks to Paola Santoscoy and Barbara Perea for their support.
